I first cracked open Slaughterhouse Five in the 6th grade, and then it was on to Breakfast of Champions, Slapstick and more. By the 12th grade of high school, I had devoted an entire 40-page thesis to Vonnegut. That's how much I adored this guy. It makes me feel older and sad and unmoored for an entire day when I heard he'd passed. Even though he had trouble believing in an omniscient deity, God bless Kurt anyway.
Historians and political scientists have agreed that war is a realistic, rational, utilitarian activity. Rationality is simply assumed by realists. Even when they recognize that aggression seldom succeeds only because the misunderstandings are frequent. Misunderstandings saw no reason. They are not motivated. Irrational, self-destructive patterns are unthinkable.
